Inflammatory Bowel Disease

More than 1 million Americans are estimated to have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease, the two most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are very similar — so similar, in fact, that they're often mistaken for one another. Both inflame the lining of your digestive tract, and both can cause severe bouts of watery (even bloody) diarrhea and abdominal pain. But Crohn's disease can occur anywhere in your digestive tract, often spreading deep into the layers of affected tissues. Ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, usually affects only the innermost lining (mucosa) of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.

Ten to 15 people out of every 100,000 in the United States develop ulcerative colitis, while about seven in 100,000 get Crohn's disease. No one knows exactly what causes these diseases, although your immune response and certain genetic and environmental factors may play a role. These conditions cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract and can be painful and debilitating. IBD and other digestive problems respond well to naturopathic treatments because they focus on balancing immune function, reducing inflammation, and promoting healing.

At Dr. Miller's Family Tree Medical Center, you receive individualized care including comprehensive assessment, testing, and treatments tailored to your special needs. The objective is to restore your natural state of health and well-being by addressing the underlying cause(s) and supporting your body’s ability to heal itself. Treatment often consists of identifying any food intolerances, incorporating natural anti-inflammatory agents, and testing for associated infections such as Candida, parasites, and pathogenic bacteria.

If you have been suffering from IBD or are experiencing symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, malnutrition, weight loss, bloating, and/or abdominal pain that you think may be IBD, please contact Dr. Miller, ND at (415) 785-3347 to schedule an appointment. She is a medically trained naturopathic doctor who has been successfully helping patients resolve their digestive problems since 1998.
